Verify a Contractor License

Before hiring anyone for home modifications, take 2 minutes to confirm their license is active. Here are the official verification portals for every state we cover.

Important: SafeHome Registry lists aging-in-place specialists, home modification contractors, and accessibility service providers. Not all contractors in this directory hold a state general contractor license — some work under city or county permits, or operate in trades that don't require state licensing (grab bar installation, ramp building under certain thresholds, etc.). Always verify license status directly with your state board before signing any contract.

What to Look For When You Verify

1

Search by company name

Use the exact business name from their quote or business card. Try partial names if the full name doesn't return results.

2

Confirm "Active" status

The license must show Active, Current, or Licensed — Active. Expired, Suspended, or Revoked are red flags. Walk away.

3

Check license classification

A commercial-only license doesn't cover residential work. Confirm the license type matches the scope of your project.

4

Ask for proof of insurance

A valid license doesn't mean they're insured. Ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers' comp before signing anything.
